Gram Lentil Rice

If you ever run out of options about what to cook for dinner today, Gram Lentil rice, also known as Kabooli is the perfect option for you! Gram Lentil Rice is made by cooking the rice among the prepared gram dal. It is a pure desi recipe which tastes awesome along with raita and salad.

Gram Lentil Rice With Ingredients and Directions:

  • Rice ½ Kg
  • Gram lentil (chana dal) 1 Cup
  • Oil 3⁄4 Cup
  • Onion large 1 Pc
  • Ginger garlic paste 1 Tbsp
  • Tomatoes large, chopped 2 Pcs
  • Salt to taste
  • Red chili powder 1 Tbsp
  • Coriander powder 1 Tsp
  • Turmeric powder 1 Tsp
  • Green chilies 3 Pcs
  • Coriander leaves ½ Bunch
  • Orange food color pinch
  • Kewra water few drops
  • Whole spice 1 Tbsp


  • Soak the rice for about an hour
  • Also, wash soak the lentil for two hours and boil it until it becomes soft
  • Drain the water after boiling and set it aside
  • Take a pot and fry the thinly sliced onion until it gets light brown, then place half on it on a paper towel
  • Now add the ginger-garlic paste and whole spices in the remaining oil and onion along with the tomatoes, fry it until the mixture gets soft
  • Add the red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder and salt to the mixture while mixing well
  • Next, add the yogurt while stirring
  • Finally, add the boiled gram lentil and cover the pot with a lid and let the water dry until the oil separates
  • Meanwhile, boil the rice and set them aside
  • Sprinkle the chopped green chilies and coriander in the lentil masala
  • Grease a pot and spread the layer of rice with layer of lentil then another layer of rice and then the lentil again
  • Finish by pouring the orange food color and the brown onion on the top of it and let the contents simmer for 10 minutes
  • You can also add kewra essence if you desire
  • Serve the Qubooli hot alongside raita and salad
