Overview: Dim Sum refers to a variety of small Chinese dishes, often served in steamer baskets or on small plates. It includes dumplings, buns, and other delicacies, typically enjoyed with tea.

Originates from: Southern China, particularly from the Cantonese-speaking regions like Hong Kong and Guangdong.

Ingredients for Basic Dim Sum (e.g., Pork Dumplings):

  • Dough:
    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 cup water
  • Filling:
    • 1/2 pound ground pork
    • 1/4 cup finely chopped shrimp
    • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
    • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
    • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
    • 1/4 cup chopped green onions
    • 1 tablespoon minced ginger


How to make it:

  1. Prepare Dough: Mix flour with water to form a dough. Knead until smooth and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  2. Make Filling: Combine ground pork, chopped shrimp, soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, green onions, and ginger in a bowl.
  3. Shape Dumplings: Roll dough into small circles. Place a spoonful of filling in the center of each circle. Fold the dough over to form a half-moon shape and pleat the edges to seal.
  4. Steam Dumplings: Arrange dumplings in a steamer basket lined with parchment paper. Steam over boiling water for about 15-20 minutes until cooked through.
